Habitat
En La Selva; Relativamente frecuente en toda la propiedad.
Distribución
De Nicaragua a Panamá. En Costa Rica, 0-400 m; Vertiente Caribe, Cordilleras Central y de Talamanca, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero, Baja Talamanca; Vertiente Pacífica, Región de Golfo Dulce.
Hábito
Palma. Estípites múltiples, de 1–6 m, erectos, esbeltos.
Hojas
Láminas foliares pinnadas, el raquis de 56.5–95 cm, con 3–14 segmentos por lado, de 18–45 cm (los intermedios). Los pecíolos más alla de la vaina de 40–75 cm.
Flores
Flores estaminadas de 2.5–4.0 mm. Flores pistiladas de 2.5–3.5 mm. Inflorescencias infrafoliares, racemosas a subpaniculado-ramificadas, los pedúnculos de 6–14.5 cm, con brácteas de 6.5–7 cm, encerradas por el profilo e insertas cerca de este, el raquis de 5–15.5(–20.5) cm, con 5–15 raquilas, de (9–)14–41 × 0.15–0.6 cm, pubescentes con tricomas simples, ± esparcidos.
Frutos
Frutos maduros de 0.6–0.8 × 0.5–0.8 cm, teselado-estriados, ampliamente ovoides, elipsoidales o subglobosos, negros.
Diagnóstico
Geonoma longevaginata se distingue por sus estípites múltiples y por sus inflorescencias infrafoliares, ramificadas, con las fóveas florales dispuestas en espiral en las raquilas. Como muchas especies de Geonoma, G. longevaginata muestra una considerable variación en el numero de segmentos de sus hojas. La mayoría de las plantas tienen numerosos (hasta 12+ por lado) segmentos angostos, pero plantas con hojas trijugadas, también ocurren en la misma población. Aunque ± abundante en algunos sitios (especialmente en LS), Geonoma longevaginata es en general poco común e irregularmente distribuida.
Fenología
Flores observadas en Enero, de Abril a Julio y de Octubre a Diciembre. Frutos observados en Enero, Abril, Setiembre y Diciembre.
Historia Natural
El nombre del epíteto se deriva de las palabras latinas longi- (largo, extenso, prolijo, difuso), y vaginatus (vaina, vainado); “largamente vainado, o que tiene vainas largas”. La planta es hospedera de Antirrhea miltiades (Nymphalidae).
