Localizando un individuo
Sendero Las Vegas (SLV), cerca de la confluencia de los Ríos Puerto Viejo y Sarapiquí.
Habitat
Bosques húmedos y muy húmedos, sabanas y sitios abiertos.
Distribución
De México a Perú y Las Antillas. En Costa Rica, 50-900 m; Vertiente Caribe de la Cordillera Central, Llanuras de San Carlos y Tortuguero; Vertiente Pacífica, Pacífico Central, Llanuras de Diquís, Península de Osa.
Hábito
Hierba o subarbusto, de 0.2-1.5 m.
Hojas
Simples, alternas, de 1-6 × 0.4-4 cm, ovadas o lanceoladas, margen crenado o dentado; pecíolos con 2 glándulas pediceladas en el ápice.
Flores
Inflorescencias de 1-2 cm, bisexuales, racemosas.
Frutos
Cápsulas de 0.4-0.5 cm.
Diagnóstico
Se reconoce por su hábito herbáceo, ramitas verticiladas, hojas ovadas o lanceoladas con dientes grandes en el margen, pecíolos glandulares e inflorescencias pequeñas.
Fenología
Flores observadas de Febrero a Noviembre. Frutos observados en Febrero y de Mayo a Octubre.
Historia Natural
En algunos países las hojas secas se usan en fumatorios, como substituto de las flores de cáñamo (Cannabis), sin embargo sus efectos son muy leves y pasajeros (obs. pers. Julio, 2002). En Las Guayanas y Surinam, utilizan la planta contra dolores abdominales, como abortivo, bactericida, antiviral, colirio, colagogo y fungicida.
