| Diagnóstico Esta especie se distingue por sus llamativas flores tubulares, anaranjadas o rojas. El número de hojas por nudo aparentemente varia, al menos parcialmente en relación con la edad y el vigor de las ramas individuales. | |||||
| Flores Inflorescencias con pedúnculos de 5–40 mm, la porción ramificada de 3–10 × 5–20 cm, brácteas triangulares, hasta de 1 mm; pedicelos hasta de 1 mm. | Historia Natural La biología floral de esta especie fue estudiada en La Selva por Beach & Bawa (1983), y Lasso & Naranjo (2003). Los frutos se dicen comestibles, pero no son particularmente agradables. Esta especie es a veces cultivada como ornamental, particularmente en jardines de mariposas. | |||||
