Habitat
bosques húmedos y muy húmedos.
Localizando un individuo
Esta especie es común en todos los bosques, pero es más frecuente en las colinas, claros soleados y ecotonos del bosque primario.
Distribución
S. México y Las Antillas al W. de Venezuela y Bolivia. En Costa Rica ampliamente distribuida; 0–1200 m.
Flores
Inflorescencias congestionado-cimosas, pilosas a puberulentas; pedúnculos de 1–5 cm; la porción florida de 1.5–4 cm × 2.5–6 cm, redondeada a cortamente piramidal en su contorno; brácteas verdes, liguladas, de 3–5 mm. Flores heterodistilias, sésiles en pequeños glomérulos; limbo del cáliz de ca. 0.3 mm, dentados; corola infundibuliforme, blanca, externamente glabra, internamente hírtula en la parte superior del tubo, tubo de 2–3 mm, lóbulos de ca. 1 mm, triangulares.
Frutos
Drupas subglobosas, de ca. 6 mm de diámetro, suculentas, púrpura-negras; pirenos dorsalmente ribeteados. [Subg. Heteropsychotria]
Hábito
Arbusto o árbol pequeño, hasta de 4 m.
Hojas
Hojas de 10–25 × 4–12 cm, elípticas, ápice acuminado con acumenes a veces curvados, base aguda a cuneada, papiráceas al secarse; con 6–11 pares de venas secundarias; pecíolos de 5–15 mm.
Diagnóstico
Esta especie se reconoce por ser un arbusto o árbol pequeño, estípulas bilobuladas, persistentes, hojas opuestas, inflorescencias terminales, cimosas con evidentes brácteas verdes, flores pequeñas, blancas, y frutos pequeños, azules a púrpuras. Esta especie ha sido incorrectamente llamada "Psychotria officinalis" por algunos autores previos, pero este nombre se aplica a una especie diferente, hallada solo en las sabanas de Venezuela, Las Guayanas, y el E. de Brasil. Esta especie es similar a Psychotria gracilenta; la cual se separa usualmente por su baja estatura, lóbulos de las estípulas más grandes, brácteas de las inflorescencias más cortas, y por sus pirenos con un surco recto longitudinal en la superficie ventral.
Fenología
Flores recolectadas casi todo el año, frutos de Marzo–Mayo.
Historia Natural
La biología reproductiva of esta especie fue estudiado por Bawa & Beach (1983) bajo el nombre de "Psychotria officinalis". La población genetica de esta especie fue estudiada por Loiselle et al. (1995a).
 
Etnobotánica
(En Las Guayanas emplean la infusión de las hojas para elaborar una bebida aromática, que sirve para tratar el asma y otras afecciones pectorales)
