Distribución
De Nicaragua a Bolivia, Ecuador, Perú y Venezuela. En Costa Rica, 0-1000 m; Vertiente Caribe, Cordilleras Central y de Guanacaste, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero; Vertiente Pacífica, Pacífico Central, Región de Golfo Dulce, Península de Nicoya.
Hábito
Palma. Estípites múltiples, menos común solitarios, de 1.7–5 m, erectos, esbeltos.
Hojas
Láminas foliares pinnadas, el raquis de 29–90 cm, con 3–27 segmentos por lado, de 16–46 cm (los intermedios). Los pecíolos más alla de la vaina de 10–46+ cm.
Flores
Flores estaminadas de 2.0–2.5 mm. Flores pistiladas de 2.5 mm. Inflorescencias infrafoliares, subpaniculadas a paniculado-ramificadas, los pedúnculos de 2.3–10 cm, con brácteas de 3–9 cm, encerradas por el profilo e insertas cerca de este, el raquis de 5.5–22 cm, con 11-55+ raquilas, de 7.5–31 × 0.1–0.2 cm, pubescentes con tricomas simples o estrellados.
Frutos
Frutos maduros de 0.5–0.75 × 0.4–0.65 cm, teselados, ampliamente elipsoidales a subglobosos, purpura-negros.
Diagnóstico
Se reconoce por sus estípites regularmente múltiples; láminas foliares pinnadas; inflorescencias infrafoliares, patentes o suberectas, muy ramificadas y por sus raquilas con las fóveas dispuestas regularmente en verticilos. Esta última característica es única dentro del género en Costa Rica. Los segmentos cuando secos tienen un distintivo brillo metálico por el envés, importante carácter que hace posible la identificación de especimenes esteriles de herbario.
Fenología
Flores observadas de Enero a Octubre. Frutos observados de Febrero a Mayo y de Agosto a Setiembre.
Historia Natural
Probablemente el nombre del epíteto tenga su origen en la palabra latina deversum, que significa “que se hospeda, aloja, o se detiene en alguna parte”; aludiendo a mi parecer al modo de crecimiento gregario de la especie. Sus hojas pueden ser empleadas para techar ranchos y otras construcciones rústicas, tienen una gran durabilidad y resistencia al fuego. La planta crece con profusión en las laderas de suelos arcillosos, de la Fila Los Arrepentidos, en la Reserva Ecológica del Colegio Técnico Profesional, de Puerto Viejo, y en la Finca “El Bejuco”, en Chilamate.
