Habitat
Bosque húmedo, muy húmedo, seco y pluvial.
Distribución
De México a Argentina, Colombia, Perú y Venezuela. En Costa Rica, bosque húmedo, muy húmedo, seco y pluvial, 0-2800 m; Vertiente Caribe, Cordilleras Central y de Guanacaste, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero, Baja Talamanca; Vertiente Pacífica, Cordilleras Central, de Guanacaste, Talamanca y Tilarán; Pacífico Central, Llanuras de Guanacaste, Península de Osa.
Hábito
Hierba erecta o escandente, de ca. 0.3-1.5 m.
Hojas
Hojas simples, alternas, de 4-18 x 0.8-6.5 cm, angostamente elípticas, elípticas, lanceoladas o ampliamente elípticas, márgenes enteros.
Flores
Flores: cálices con los sépalos de 6-9 mm, blancos o morados; corolas con los pétalos de tamaño semejante a los sépalos, azul-pálidos o blancos. Inflorescencias terminales, tirsoides, de 2.5-10 cm.
Frutos
Cápsulas trivalvadas, de 7-13 mm.
Semillas
Semillas hasta 6 en cada lóculo, trianguladas, rugosas.
Diagnóstico
Hierbas con frecuencia escandentes; con las vainas foliares conspicuamente pilosas o con una única hilera de tricomas; inflorescencias fecuentemente compactas; flores con los sépalos blancos o morados.
Fenología
Flores observadas todo el año. Frutos observados en Enero y de Junio a Diciembre.
Historia Natural
El líquido extraído de los frutos machacados y luego filtrado es usado para tratar vejigas en el epitelio de la boca y la lengua. También puede ser usado como un tinte natural. En Las Guyanas usan la decocción de la planta entera contra la gastralgia y suelen utilizarla en lavados genitales para tratar la gonorrea. La decocción de las hojas la usan como remedio contra la tos y el asma. El nombre del epíteto se deriva de las palabras griegas hexa- (seis), y andro (hombre, estambre); “que tiene seis estambres”.
