Habitat
Húmedos, muy húmedos y secos, áreas disturbadas. En La Selva Sendero Ribereño (SR).
Distribución
De México a Argentina. En Costa Rica, 0-1500 m; Ambas Vertientes de la Cordillera de Talamanca; Vertiente Caribe, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero; Vertiente Pacífica, Llanuras de Guanacaste, Pacífico Central, Península de Osa.
Hábito
Liana subleñosa, de hasta 10 m.
Hojas
Hojas simples, alternas, de 2.5-10 × 1.5-6 cm, ovado-lanceoladas o ampliamente ovadas.
Flores
Flores con el perianto hialino. Las inflorescencias de 3-10 cm.
Frutos
Frutos en forma de cápsulas de 3-4 mm.
Diagnóstico
Se reconoce por su hábito escandente, hojas alternas y flores dispuestas en espigas, a menudo agrupadas en estructuras paniculadas.
Fenología
Flores observadas todo el año. Frutos observados en Abril y Diciembre.
Historia Natural
La planta se ha usado medicinalmente para tratar casos de blenorragia, disentería, dispepsia, además tiene propiedades depurativas.
