Habitat
En La Selva, Sendero Tres Rios (STR). Bosques húmedos, muy húmedos y secos.
Distribución
De México a Bolivia, Perú y Las Antillas. En Costa Rica, 0-1000 m; Vertiente Caribe, Llanuras de San Carlos y Tortuguero, Baja Talamanca; Vertiente Pacífica, Valle Central, Llanuras de Guanacaste, Penínsulas de Osa y Nicoya.
Hábito
Hierba erecta, de 0.5-1 m.
Hojas
Hojas simples, opuestas, de 3-13 × 0.8-4.5 cm, elípticas a angostamente elípticas.
Flores
Flores con el perianto hialino. Las inflorescencias de 3-11 cm.
Diagnóstico
Se reconoce por sus hojas con los ápices largamente acuminados y por sus inflorescencias con los fascículos de flores, cubriendo profusamente el raquis.
Fenología
Flores observadas de Enero a Junio y en Octubre. Frutos observados en Enero, Marzo y de Octubre a Diciembre.
Historia Natural
Los indígenas Kuna de Panamá, usan la planta como hemostático.
