Habitat
Bosques húmedos, muy húmedos, pluviales y secos, sitios abiertos
Distribución
De EEUU a Argentina y Las Antillas. En Costa Rica, 0-1400 m; Ambas vertientes de las Cordilleras Central, de Guanacaste, Talamanca y Tilarán; Vertiente Caribe, Valle de la Estrella, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero; Vertiente Pacífica, Valle Central, Llanuras de Guanacaste, Península de Osa e Isla del Coco.
Hábito
Hierba erecta o semipostrada, de 0.1-1 m.
Hojas
Simples, opuestas, de 0.6-4 × 0.3-1.7 cm, oblongo-elípticas a oblongo-obovadas; margen finamente aserrado.
Flores
Inflorescencias ciatias terminales o pseudoaxilares, involucro con glándulas oblongas o reniformes, apéndices petaloides presentes.
Frutos
Cápsulas de 0.15-0.2 cm.
Diagnóstico
Se reconoce por sus tallos usualmente erectos, hojas con el borde finamente aserrado y frutos glabros con semillas acostilladas transversalmente.
Fenología
Flores observadas de Febrero a Abril, de Junio a Octubre y en Diciembre. Frutos observados de Enero a Abril y de Mayo a Octubre.
Historia Natural
Medicinalmente se ha usado en casos de disuria y fiebre.
