Habitat
Bosque húmedo, muy húmedo y pluvial.
Distribución
De México a Bolivia, Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela y las Antillas. En Costa Rica, 0-1300 m; Ambas vertientes de la Cordillera de Tilarán; Vertiente Caribe Cordillera Central y de Talamanca, Llanuras de San Carlos y Tortuguero, Baja Talamanca; Vertiente Pacífica, Pacífico Central, Península de Osa.
Hábito
Arbusto, de 1-4 m.
Hojas
Hojas de 7-21 x 3-9 cm, elíptico-ovadas a ovado-lanceoladas, 5-plinervadas. Inflorescencias de 2-3 cm, cimas pseudolaterales.
Flores
Flores 5-meras: cáliz marginalmente truncado, el margen de ca. 0.5-0.8 mm de alto, cubierto por dientes externos subulados de 2-5.5 mm; pétalos de 5-6 mm, blancos.
Frutos
Frutos de 0.7-0.9 cm.
Diagnóstico
Plantas arbustivas; ramitas jóvenes (y ejes de las inflorescencias e hipantos) heterótricas (el indumento compuesto por tricomas simples e hirsutos y estrellados); hojas 5-plinervadas, con las bases ligeramente asimétricas; inflorescencias cimas pseudolaterales, ramificadas cerca de la base; flores 5-meras, con el cáliz representado por un reborde o margen truncado, mucho más corto que los dientes exteriores, con los pétalos blancos y glabros, con el conectivo de las tecas prolongado (pero no apendiculado); y los frutos azul-obscuros al madurar.
Fenología
Flores y frutos observados todo el año.
 
Etnobotánica
Purra (En Las Guayanas utilizan la decocción de la planta completa, como astringente contra la diarrea. La decocción de las hojas la usan para cicatrizar llagas, contra la disentería y como antiespasmódico. El líquido producto de las hojas maceradas en agua fría, es usado en baños vaginales, como antihemorrágico y antiséptico. Las hojas pulverizadas son empleadas como vulnerario)
