Habitat
bosque húmedo, muy húmedo y seco.
Distribución
De México a Brasil, Perú, Venezuela, Las Antillas y Africa. En Costa Rica, 0-300 m; Vertiente Caribe, Llanuras de San Carlos y Tortuguero; Vertiente Pacífica, Pacífico Central, Llanuras de Guanacaste, Península de Osa.
Frutos
Cápsulas de 0.1-0.13 cm.
Hábito
Hierba, de 0.2-0.8 m.
Flores
Flores geminadas, 1 flor estaminada y 1 flor pistilada. Flores estaminadas: cáliz con 4-6 sépalos en 2 verticilos, imbricados; pétalos ausentes; disco extra estaminal, usualmente lobulado; estambres 3-15, filamentos separados o connatos en la base, formando una columna; pistiloide ausente. Flores pistiladas: cáliz con 5-6 sépalos en 2 verticilos, imbricados; pétalos ausentes; disco cupuliforme o dividido; ovario con 3(4-5) carpelos; óvulos 2 en cada lóculo; estilos 3(-4), separados o unidos, bífidos o varias veces divididos.
Diagnóstico
Se reconoce por su hábito herbáceo; hojas sólo en los ejes secundarios del tallo; inflorescencias con 2 flores (1 estaminada y 1 pistilada), sépalos de las flores pistiladas angostos y semillas usualmente blancas con 5-7 hileras dorsales de diminutas puntuaciones (50×).
Hojas
Hojas simples, alternas, de 0.2-1.5 × 0.1-0.6 cm, elíptico-oblongas a ovado-oblongas.
Fenología
Flores observadas de Febrero a Mayo, en Agosto y Noviembre. Frutos observados de Marzo a Noviembre.
Historia Natural
Se menciona que sus extractos han demostrado actividad contra el virus de Hepatitis-B, en humanos. La decocción de la planta entera se ha empleado como analgésico, desinflamatorio, digestivo, diurético, piscicida, tónico, y se ha usado como remedio en casos de diabetes, disentería, escabies, gonorrea, hidropesía, ictericia, malaria, menorragia, oliguria, prurito, y aplicada en cataplasmas (mezclada con sal) se recomienda como antiinflamatorio y vulnerario.
