Habitat
Bosque húmedo y muy húmedo.
Distribución
De Honduras a Colombia, Ecuador y Perú. En Costa Rica, bosque húmedo y muy húmedo, 0-900 m; Vertiente Caribe, Cordilleras Central y de Talamanca, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero, Baja Talamanca; Vertiente Pacífica, Cordillera de Talamanca, Pacífico Central, Península de Osa.
Hábito
Hierba, de ca. 0.2-0.4 m, con los tallos erectos o decumbentes, con los nudos inferiores a veces rizomatosos.
Hojas
Hojas simples, alternas, de 4.5-23 x 1.6-8 cm, elípticas a elíptico-oblongas, márgenes enteros.
Flores
Flores: cálices con los sépalos de ca. 3 mm, verdes; corolas con los pétalos de tamaño semejante a los sépalos, blancos. Inflorescencias axilares y terminales, tirsoides, de 3-11 cm.
Frutos
Cápsulas bivalvadas, de 3-4.5 mm.
Semillas
Semillas 2, elipsoidales, acostilladas.
Diagnóstico
Hierbas con los tallos cortos y erectos o elongados y usualmente decumbentes, con los nudos basales ocasionalmente rizomatosos; hojas dispuestas en espiral, con la base asimétrica; inflorescencias muy ramificadas, con frecuencia las axilares superiores asociadas con las terminales formado así una inflorescencia compuesta; flores con los sépalos copiosamente indumentados con tricomas morado-rojizos, con pétalos blancos; frutos cápsulas bivalvadas, discoides, con dos semillas acostilladas.
Fenología
Flores observadas todo el año. Frutos observados de Febrero a Junio.
Historia Natural
El nombre del epíteto significa que es “dura, fuerte, resistente”. Por su tolerancia a la sombra y su bello aspecto, podría ser una excelente planta para la ornamentación de espacios interiores reducidos.
