Distribución
De México a Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú, Venezuela, Las Antillas, Camerún, Gabón y Madagascar. En Costa Rica, 0-1700 m; Ambas vertientes de la Cordillera de Talamanca; Vertiente Caribe, Cordilleras Central y de Tilarán, Llanuras de Los Guatusos, San Carlos y Tortuguero; Vertiente Pacífica, Cordillera de Guanacaste, Pacífico Central, Península de Osa.
Habitat
bosque húmedo, muy húmedo y pluvial.
Localizando un individuo
Áreas abiertas en el Sendero Tres Rios (STR).
Hojas
Hojas simples, alternas, de 0.8-4 x 0.3-1 cm, elípticas, oblongo-elípticas, ovadas a oblanceoladas, márgenes aserrados o crenados.
Hábito
Hierba erecta, o semipostrada, de 0.1-0.5 m.
Frutos
Cápsulas septicidas, de 0.5-0.6 cm.
Diagnóstico
Hierbas subpostradas o erectas, creciendo usualmente en sitios anegados o en taludes muy húmedos; hojas cortamente pecioladas, con los margenes aserrados, estípulas fimbriadas; flores solitarias con los pedúnculos filiformes, corona con los apéndices saetiformes, rojos y petalos rosados o blancos.
Flores
Flores con pedúnculos de 0.6-2 cm; sépalos de 0.4-0.5 cm; pétalos semejantes, blancos o rosados.
Historia Natural
La infusión de la planta completa es usada en Las Guayanas como antiemético, antiinflamatorio, astringente, colirio, digestivo, diurético, estomáquico, febrífugo e hipoglucemiante.
Fenología
Flores observadas todo el año. Frutos observados en Enero y de Junio a Diciembre.
